Knocknarea

Knocknarea hike dominates the skyline over the Coolera peninsula and is one of the most striking landmarks in the entire country. The giant rocky cairn of “Queen Maeve’s grave” is clearly visible atop the mountain from various approaches to Strandhill.
On a clear day, you can witness a panoramic view that is breath-taking. Overlooking Strandhill, you can see the ocean to the west and the coastline towards Easky. Away to the north, east and south you can see mountains including Ben Bulben, rivers, lakes and woodlands.

Time Walk: 1h50 to 2 hours, good footwear are recommended as the trail can be both wet and slippery.

Sligo Abbey

This abbey survives from medieval days. It was built by Maurice Fitzgerald for the Dominicans in 1252 and was accidentally burnt down in 1414, when a candle left carelessly in the building set it on fire.
Legend says that worshippers saved the abbey’s silver bell which was thrown into Lough Gill and only those free from sin can hear it peal. The site contains a great wealth of carvings including Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculpture, It’s the only sculptured 15th Century high altar to survive in any Irish monastic church.

Mullaghmore Head

is a small fishing village. The sandy beach is ideal for a spot of swimming or windsurfing. Go for a leisurely stroll on the Wild Atlantic Way and take in panoramic views of Slieve League Cliffs or watch the waves crash under Classiebawn Castle, this beautiful private castle, you can walk around and also enjoy surfing as a spectator sport. A lot of international surfers ride some of Europe’s best waves.

Eagles Flying

Eagles, hawks and other raptors fly around you, to your heads safely during a show-demonstration. The Irish Raptor Research Centre / Eagles Flying is situated on more than 27 ha of mature parklands near Ballymote. Currently it is the home of more than 100 eagles, hawks, owls, falcons and vultures. Altogether there are more than 450 birds and animals, encompassing nearly 100 different species, in the centre.

Hazelwood Forest

Only 5km outside Sligo Town, the Hazelwood Demesne is located at Half Moon Bay along the shores of Lough Gill. The short walks here are among the most beautiful in the country, with views from the trail toward Church Island, Cottage Island and Goat Island and the full expanse of Lough Gill.
